March is Fraud Prevention Month

(NC)—March is Fraud Prevention Month in Canada and around the world. In Canada, the campaign is designed to improve Canadians' awareness and understanding about the dangers of fraud and help them learn how to recognize, report and stop it.

The campaign is hosted by the Fraud Prevention Forum. The forum is chaired by the Competition Bureau, an independent law enforcement agency, and consists of more than 80 members from federal, provincial and municipal governments, law enforcement agencies, consumer and volunteer groups, retailers and others in the private sector, committed to fighting fraud aimed at businesses and consumers.

Each year, forum members host and participate in many education and awareness activities for consumers and businesses. For example, Scam Jams, which are one-day consumer awareness sessions, National Consumer Shredding Days that rally consumers to shred personal information, as well as townhall sessions and talk radio round tables.

The Fraud Prevention Forum model has been adopted around the world. Twenty-eight countries, including the United States, Belgium and Australia, will host Fraud Prevention Month activities this year.

As part of this year's campaign, activities are planned all across Canada in major cities and small towns, so if you want to reduce your risk of being victimized and learn more about Fraud Prevention Month, the forum, or to view the complete list of participating organizations, visit www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/fraud.
