Why you can believe what you're about to read

(NC)—Truth is an essential part of any successful ad campaign. That is why the advertising industry created the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards. It sets the standards for acceptable advertising in Canada. The Code helps ensure the ads you see and hear are truthful, fair and accurate. Administered by Advertising Standards Canada (ASC), and first published over forty years ago, the Code is regularly updated to ensure that it remains relevant in today's environment. ASC is the national, not-for-profit, industry body committed to ensuring the integrity and viability of advertising through industry self regulation. Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions on the subject, courtesy of Linda Nagel, president and chief executive officer of ASC:

What do I do if I have a concern about an ad that appears in Canadian media?

Submit written complaints in one of three ways:
• Online (www.adstandards.com)
• Via mail (Advertising Standards Canada, 175 Bloor Street East, South Tower, Suite 1801, Toronto, Ontario, M4W 3R8)
• Via fax (416-961-7904)

What happens to my complaint?

Complaints are first reviewed by ASC. If a complaint raises a potential issue under the Code, it will be evaluated by independent National and Regional Consumer Response Councils in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Halifax or Vancouver. Council members include senior industry and public representatives who volunteer their time to support this important effort.

What happens if an ad contravenes the Code?

If the Council finds an ad contravenes the Code, the advertiser is asked to withdraw it or amend it.

ASC informs the public about upheld complaints in its online quarterly Ad Complaints Reports. If you want to learn more about the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards visit www.adstandards.com, or call the recorded information line 1-877-656-8646.
