(NC)The holidays are a great time to see family and friends and talk about the New Year ahead. One topic that is often taboo, even within families, is money. It can be difficult to talk about financial worries or long-term goals even with those who are closest to us. But if you learn more about financial life skills now, you'll be able to open a whole new topic of conversation with the people you love in the year to come.
Why? Because people in British Columbia lose millions every year to fraud and unsuitable investments. The more we talk about it, the better able we'll all be to tell the difference between a legitimate investment and one we shouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.
Here are two conversation starters you can find online. Both are endorsed by the B.C. Securities Commission, and can be found at www.investright.org:
Scam Meter. Wondering if the investment you're interested in is legitimate? Use the InvestRight scam meter to help you spot a potential investment scam. In three questions you'll have the tools and the knowledge to better assess your investments.
The "I got scammed" video. Imagine trusting someone with your entire nest egg, only to find that your "friend" was a fraud artist. It happened to more than 20 innocent people in one B.C. community. Hear their stories online at www.investright.org/gottaken.aspx.
