(NC)—Start thinking now about what the digital television switch means to you.
On February 17, 2009, over-the-air broadcast signals from the United States convert to digital, so anyone using an antenna to access conventional (analog) television will require a set-top converter box to receive programming. For Canadian broadcasts, there's a bit more time. The Canadian Radio-Television and Communications Commission (CRTC) has set a final deadline for this digital transition to August 31, 2011. For the vast majority of Canadians with a digital tuner and subscribe to digital cable services, you will see no change once the switch takes place. Here are additional tips on this subject, courtesy of Rogers:
1. If you use an antenna you do not need to buy a digital TV, but you will need a converter box. These are readily available for purchase or lease.
2. To ensure you continue to receive your favourite channels from both the US and Canada, now is the time to look at your options for subscription cable TV, as following the switch these channels will only be available digitally.
3. If your television set is labelled “Digital Monitor”, or “HDTV Monitor”, “Digital Ready”, “HDTV Ready,” it may not contain the needed digital tuner. You will likely need a set-top box to view it. These terminals are provided by your cable TV provider.
4. If you're a digital cable customer, you won't experience any change following the switch. You already have enhanced viewing choices with services such as On Demand from Rogers. Giving you the most advanced features, freedom and flexibility to date, with as many as 5,000 titles, On Demand lets you watch your favourite episodic programming from leading networks such as Citytv, Global, and E! at a time that suits you best. In addition, you also get HBO Canada with never-before-seen content, including exclusive series, films, documentaries, live concerts and sporting events. Add the High Definition Personal Recorder (PVR) to this mix and every favourite show will be yours anywhere, any time.
