Don't be scammed by gift cards or prepaid credit cards

(NC)—During this past holiday season, you likely gained some great presents along with a few extra pounds. Perhaps you also received some gift cards or prepaid credit cards, allowing you to buy whatever you want. These cards are becoming increasingly popular because they're convenient and easy to buy. Their popularity has however created new opportunities for scammers keen to separate you from your hard-earned money.
Don't be an easy target
Gift and prepaid credit card scams are similar to credit and debit cards fraud. Scammers will buy blank cards and may register them with a small dollar amount or leave them blank. These fraudulent cards are then commonly sold on online auction sites, exchange or barter sites, or through third party non-retailers. Some are even sold on the street or in mall parking lots.

Here are things to consider when purchasing gift or prepaid credit cards from retail vendors:

The gift card design: The store name and brand should figure prominently. For example, the Sears name should not appear on a gift card from Wal-Mart. Some cards are redeemable at more than one establishment, like shopping mall gift cards or department stores like HBC, whose cards can be used in the Bay or Zellers.

Declared value and currency: Make sure that the gift card clearly states its monetary value. Does this amount match the value stated by the seller? Does the card specify a currency or country of use? If the card is programmed in U.S. dollars, you may not be able to use it in Canadian dollars. Before you buy, make sure the gift card is valid in Canada or North America.

Printed with typos? Read the card. Make sure it does not include any important spelling or grammar mistakes. If it comes from a Canadian company, make sure it is written in both English and French.

Card validation: Currently, the gift card validation process at the retail level is not perfect. This may leave you vulnerable because you won't be able to tell if your card has any value or not.

Remember, reduce your risk. Always buy your gift or pre-paid credit cards at reliable stores and outlets. More information is available online at www.assistel.com.
