(NC)—The challenge was posed and the goal was set.
Last year, Staples asked Canadians to stop throwing empty ink and toner cartridges into the trash can and instead, bring them to recycling bins at their store locations.
The retailer called it their Million Cartridge Challenge, with a lofty target to collect one million empty ink and toner units. Within eight months, Staples is claiming a victory for all by successfully diverting more than 1.3 million used cartridges from landfill sites.
“We have exceeded our goal,” says company president, Steve Matyas. “I knew Canadians would respond enthusiastically to the call. Everyone who participated has contributed to the success of this campaign, or more importantly, to the sustainable good health of our land, air, and sea environment. Thank you Canadians, in fact, thanks a million!”
The Million Cartridge Challenge, which aimed to reach or surpass its goal before the Earth Day deadline, continues to collect and recycle cartridges year-round at Staples stores.
“Recycling is not new to us of course,” Matyas continued. “Our stores have been recycling cartridges, rechargeable batteries, and cell phones for many, many years. But this is the first time we've rallied our customers to make a real difference—and they really did. We have never collected so much before.”
For every million cartridges kept from landfill, he explains, “you and I can prevent the deposit of 96,000 kilograms of aluminium, 400 tonnes of plastic, and 10 million litres of oil into 8,000 cubic feet of Canadian land.”
