(NC)—Despite last year's near record snowfall, only 57 per cent of Canadian drivers put snow tires on their cars and of the 43 per cent who don't use snow tires, half (54 per cent) are not willing to spend the money to do so.
“The survey shows that many Canadians continue to take chances on the roads during the winter months,” said Francois Boulanger, president and CEO of RBC General Insurance Company. “Drivers in provinces that don't typically get as much snow should definitely be prepared for unexpected snow storms, considering the fact they may not have as much experience driving in bad weather.”
In Quebec, where the use of snow tires is the law, the percentage of drivers who use snow tires jumps to 96 per cent; and in Atlantic Canada, 72 per cent of the respondents use snow tires, most likely due to their snowier winters.
But the numbers are much lower in Ontario and in the Western provinces. 43 per cent of Ontario drivers don't use snow tires and less than a third (31 per cent) of the respondents in Manitoba and Saskatchewan put snow tires on their vehicles.
